Colchester Zoo’s Action for the Wild Charitable Trust: Supporting Conservation Projects Worldwide

Colchester Zoo’s Action for the Wild Charitable Trust is seeking applications for its grant programme to assist conservation projects worldwide. The Fund supports and encourages conservation projects that address conservation priorities at both local and global levels.

Objectives

  • Colchester Zoo aims to provide financial assistance and technical advice to in situ projects in order to support the conservation of endangered species and their habitats.
  • Colchester Zoo aims to provide habitat and survival aids for native species and support nature projects nationally.
  • Action for the Wild aims to raise awareness and respect for nature through formal and informal education programmes.
  • Action for the Wild aims to encourage and support scientific and quantitative research work.

Priority Areas

  • Wildlife conservation projects in species-range countries
  • Habitat / prey protection projects in species-range countries
  • Education activities in species-range countries
  • Scientific techniques for species conservation monitoring
  • Human / wildlife conflict resolution

Funding information

Maximum amount to be applied for is £5,000.

Eligibility Criteria

A conservation project needs to follow all or some of the following criteria in order to receive funding:

  • The project needs to address a globally-recognised conservation priority
  • The project should focus on threatened species and benefit wild populations of this species
  • The project should increase habitat protection / management
  • Projects will be favoured that are collaborative in nature, with partnerships involving different organisations, the government, local communities and specialist groups
  • Overseas projects need to have approval from the host government and appropriate authorities
  • The project needs to have long term goals. It needs to be part of an established conservation programme or well-suited to becoming a long term programme
  • The project needs to be realistic; with sound scientific methodology and be logistically feasible with a high probability of success
  • The project should be based on sound scientific and management principles and clearly deliver a conservation goal i.e. a research report, education materials, a demonstrated contribution to a critical conservation need etc
  • The project should have existing funding arrangements and not duplicate or conflict with other ongoing conservation efforts
