Nominations Open for 2018-2019 International Green Gown Awards!

Deadline: 31 January 2019

Nominations are open for 2018-2019 International Green Gown Awards to recognise exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by universities and colleges.

The Awards cover all aspects of educational institutions – from their teaching and research, leadership, buildings and food to how students can benefit the quality of life in the communities around them.

The Awards provide the sector with benchmarks for excellence and are respected by Government, funding councils, senior management, academics and students.

The International Green Gown Awards are supported by UN Environment and the Global Universities Partnership on Environment and Sustainability and are open to any university or college across the world. The ethos of the Green Gown Awards is to ensure the lessons and example of good practice are shared and will put universities and colleges as leaders in sustainability as well as being able to continue their learning from global leaders.

The International Green Gown Awards are supported by UN Environment and are open to any university or college across the world.

The Green Gown Awards are run in the UK and Ireland, Australasia, French speaking Europe and Canada and globally through the International Green Gown Awards. They bring them together with the winners from each region going head to head for a coveted International Green Gown Award.

Examples will range from economic, social and environmental impacts with organisations and sectors outside the institution where innovative new approaches to bringing positive benefit can be found.
  • Student Engagement: This category reflects that students and staff must work together to achieve goals using “top-down” and “bottom-up grass roots” methods to achieve maximum understanding and engagement across an institution.Examples could include: Social media projects; Awareness and communication campaigns; Procurement actions; Sustainability reporting and websites; Volunteering activities organised by unions, societies and similar organisations within institutions; Community projects.
  • Sustainability Institution of the Year: This category recognises sustained, whole-institution commitment and impact to becoming a sustainable organisation.
    • To improve economic and social responsibility and environmental performance through a whole institution approach strategic sustainability activities through four main areas must be achieved:
      • Leadership and Governance
      • Estates and Operations
      • Learning, Teaching and Research
      • Partnership and Engagement
