Principle 10 Small Sub Grants Fund: Accessing Justice in Environmental Matters

Deadline: 30 September 2016

Principle 10 is seeking proposals from eligible organizations for its Small Sub Grants Fund (SSGF) with an aim to support the creation of a regional agreement on access rights, the right to information, participation and access to justice in environmental matters. This agreement has the potential to:

  • Provide stronger protections and procedural safeguards against the impact of mining and energy projects amongst others which could result in devastating impacts in the region.
  • Channel technical assistance, workshops, and capacity building for countries in the region: whether through international organizations, bilateraldonors or by having a dedicated secretariat in the form of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
  • Create new standards for whistle-blowers and protection requirements for environmental defenders.
  • Engage Small Island Developing States (SIDS) of the Caribbean to have a greater involvement in the negotiations and improve the standards of their laws to protect environmental democracy.

Priority Areas (Not Limited)

  • Generating evidence of environmental injustice and the importance of using access rights.
  • Use of storytelling, theatre, radio, social media and television to raise public awareness about access rights and the regional agreement.
  • Training stakeholders including government, civil society, indigenous groups, and journalists, on the importance and use of access rights to prevent or address human rights violations.

Grant Information

  • The SSGF provides grants up to US$2,000.
  • Grant recipients have the opportunity to be part of a unique network of environmental organizations, working around the globe.

  • Be certified non-profit and nongovernmental.
