The Community Fund for Mental Health education is proudly presented by Farm Credit Canada and supported by every Do More Ag partner and many local businesses!
The Fund was created to provide agriculture communities across Canada with access to mental health education and literacy at no cost. It is important that agriculture communities across Canada begin learning the tools to begin supporting ourselves and one another through not only a mental health crisis but also to mental wellbeing.
The Community Fund is a project where individuals can apply to have mental health training brought to their community. Each community has the opportunity to choose from the following training options: 2 day Mental Health First Aid certification course their very own Talk, Ask Listen workshop which is a mental health education program tailored to the very unique industry of agriculture. MHFA is available in English or French, and at this time is delivered in-person only to a minimum of 8 people and a maximum of 25. Talk, Ask, Listen, is available in English, and can be delivered virtually via webinar, or in person as a workshop. There are no participant maximums. Over the past three years, the fund has provided this free education to over 1,600 individual producers in 66 locations across Canada.
AgCulture is a c health in agriculture literacy program developed to:
- Build awareness of the agriculture industry and the unique stressors facing Canadian producers.
- Further educate mental health professionals who may not have extensive or direct experience on the farm.
- Improve relatability between a farmer and mental health professional so that an effective therapeutic relationship can be built and maintained.
- Learn to apply culturally competent practical skills to aid in building the therapeutic relationship with rural clients, plus more.
Community Workshops
- Talk Ask Listen
- Do More Ag is proud to provide a half day interactive workshop solely dedicated to those who are involved in agriculture. Knowing that knowledge is power and farming is unique, the goal for this workshop is threefold. One, that you walk away with greater awareness and understanding of mental health. Two, you can access this training in the cab of your tractor or at the office. And three, help you and those around you break down barriers and dispel the stigma through three actions – talking, asking and listening.
- The “Talk, Ask, Listen” workshop was created by farmers for farmers. It has already been delivered to thousands of producers across Canada.
- Mental Health First Aid
- Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), is a 2-day, 12 hour course, developed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada and facilitated by a Certified Instructor, is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Just as physical first aid is administered to an injured person before medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA is given until appropriate treatment is found or until the crisis is resolved.
- The MHFA Canada program aims to improve mental health literacy and provide the skills and knowledge to help people better manage potential or developing mental health problems in themselves, a family member, a friend or a colleague.
- In The Know
- An evidence-based mental health literacy program for farmers and the agricultural community. In The Know is designed specifically for farmers, their families and those who are involved in and/or support the agriculture sector. Through this four-hour workshop, participants will cover the topics of stress, depression, anxiety, substance use and how to start a conversation around mental well-being. The workshops are hosted by a trained facilitator who has a deep understanding of farming in Canada, using ‘real-life’ examples from agriculture.
- In the Know aims to build mental health knowledge and increase help-seeking among farmers.
Eligible Expenses
The fund will cover all expenses incurred for the Mental Health First Aid certification, including facilitator costs, course materials, catering and room rental (if required). Catering and room rental costs will be capped.
Eligibility Criteria
This application is to be completed by individuals who are interested in organizing a mental health course in their agriculture community. The fund is open to all agriculture communities across Canada!
