The Birmingham City Council has announced its Arts Activities Commissioning Grant to support a range of activities, which enable local people to engage with and shape arts and culture on their doorsteps.
The Cultural Development Service empowers future generations to develop their creativity and play an active part in the culture and heritage of the city, whilst supporting the growth and development of artists and companies working in this sector.
Themes
Through 2022 to 2023 Arts Activities commissioning, the council is seeking to support arts projects under the following four themes.
- Culture on our Doorstep: arts activities in local neighbourhoods creating a better sense of place, local identity, better quality of life, health and wellbeing for communities and within communities.
- Next Generation: arts activities for children and young people who don’t ordinarily participate in arts activities (outside of education) engaging their imagination and interest, inspiring them to be bold and ambitious.
- Cultural Leadership – leadership development opportunities: aimed at diversifying Birmingham’s arts sector leaders to better represent the diverse population.
- Birmingham 2022 Creative City Programme Legacy Funding: activities for organisations who received Commonwealth Games Creative City grants to build on the collaborations formed between arts organisations/groups and communities to continue to co-create exciting artworks, inspire community cohesion and increase physical activity and mental wellbeing.

- Culture on Our Doorstep – £66,500.
- Next Generation – £66,500.
- Cultural Leadership – £66,500.
- Birmingham 2022 Creative City Programme Legacy Funding – £100,000.
- How much funding can you apply for?
- New and Emerging arts organisations – If your organisation or group has been running for less than one year you can apply for £1,000 – £3,000 using the delivery track record of the key individuals leading your organisation/ group or managing the proposed activity.
- Established arts organisations – If your organisation or group has at least one year of recent (last 12 months) management accounts/ annual accounts which demonstrate at least one year’s worth of recent (last 12 months) arts activity delivery at a similar level to the proposed activity you can apply for £1,000 – £10,000.
Outcomes
To help achieve the outcomes for the city, council supports the delivery of high quality inclusive arts activities that engage Birmingham residents.
These activities will contribute to the following outcomes:
- Birmingham residents are empowered to express themselves through culture and creativity and have access to creative activities to improve their health and wellbeing; all within their own neighbourhoods.
- Support positive change in individual mental and physical wellbeing including supporting children and young people aged 0-25 to be confident about their own sense of identity.
- Birmingham’s cultural sector leadership better represents its culturally diverse population.
- Birmingham residents and communities feel more connected and integrated to the community around them.
- Arts and creative projects have helped to grow and diversify participants and audiences interacting with co-created arts.
Eligibility Criteria
- To apply for a 2022 to 2023 Arts Activities Commissioning Grant you must be:
- A constituted, not-for-profit, Birmingham based organization, or
- A group that has arts as the main object or purpose in their Constitution or Articles of Association (i.e. an arts organisation).
- Your organisation or group must have:
- A signed governing document (Constitution or Articles of Association e.g. set of rules) appropriate to the legal structure of your organisation, showing your organisation/group is not-for-profit and has arts as its main object or purpose
- A bank account in the name of your organisation or group which requires two signatories/dual authorisation (i.e. not a personal account)
