The GEF Microfinance Program/ United Nations Development Programme (GPF GEF / UNDP) Algeria has launched an open call for projects with the aim of continuing to support the environmental actions of OP6 and the implementation of its 7th operational phase (OP7) which aims to “promote and support innovative, inclusive and scalable initiatives, and encourage multi-stakeholder partnerships at the local level to address global environmental problems in priority landscapes”.
This program aims to provide NGOs and CSOs with grants to enable them to contribute effectively to meeting global environmental challenges while meeting local sustainable development needs. In Algeria, the program implemented by UNDP and executed by UNOPS started in the year 2012 and has so far provided technical and financial support to more than 40 projects across the country.
Objectives
According to the operational phase, this call for projects intends to award:
- OP6 US$91,689 to support projects up to 10 months in duration
- OP7 US$193,912 to support projects up to 24 months in duration
- The objective is to support local initiatives that will promote integrated (biodiversity, climate change, and land management), inclusive and innovative approaches to the conservation of natural heritage by aligning with the national legal framework and the national strategy of the PMF. /FEM of OP7
Funding Information & Duration
- Grants awarded under this call for projects will follow the operational guidelines of the GEF SGP, and the maximum amount must not exceed the limit of USD 50,000. The funding cap will only be granted to projects with significant scope.
- The average funding is 35,000 USD.
- The duration of the project must not exceed 24 months
Location
The GEF/UNDP PMF will mainly focus its intervention on the scale of the specific landscape:
- Terrestrial landscape: “Steppes of the Saharan Atlas”
- This landscape covers all or part of the territories of 6 steppe wilayas: Naama, El-Bayadh, Djelfa, Laghouat, M’sila, and Biskra, on which the Saharan Atlas Cultural Park is located.
- The SGP encourages active associations from outside this area to propose innovative projects, they will be examined and taken into consideration.
Eligibility Criteria
- This call for projects is open to Algerian civil society organizations (associations).
- Projects can come from all over the national territory and will be examined according to the eligibility criteria for PMF/FEM projects.
- Project proposals must:
- Take into consideration the national environmental context; – Be coherent and strategic; – Adopt the participatory approach during the design, implementation, and evaluation of projects; – Consider the gender approach and involve young people and people with disabilities.
- Be the subject of co-financing equivalent to at least 20% of the cost of the overall project.
Selection Criteria
- All eligible proposals received will be presented to the PMF/FEM National Steering Committee, the sole body that decides on the granting of funding, for review and
- approval. Only pre-selected NGOs will be contacted.
