Fondo de Mujeres del Sur – Women’s Fund from the South (Latin America and the Caribbean) together with the African Women’s Development Fund (Africa and the MENA Region), the South Asia Women Fund (Asia) and the International Indigenous Women’s Forum, supported and financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, has currently announced its call for proposals of Leading from the South (LFS) for the Latin American and the Caribbean Region.
Leading from the South is a special fund, to resource women’s rights activism in the Global South for a period of four years (2017-2020). It’s a joint programming initiative to be implemented by four renowned Women’s Funds.
Through grantmaking, capacity development and other resourcing, LFS will strengthen women’s movements in the global South to influence and impact on public policies, confront unequal power relations and eliminate exclusion, discrimination, violence and unequal treatment. The fund’s focus on women’s rights, on advocacy and on elimination of marginalization and discrimination highlight a strong alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), to which UN Member States are committed, particularly with Sustainable Development Goal 5 of the Agenda 2030 on the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.
Goals and Thematic Areas
Through Leading from the South Programme, there will be financed proposals that seek to advance the following Objectives:
- Leadership, voice-agency and women’s political participation
- Increase collective leadership,voice and political participation in the decisions that affect their lives in Latin America and the Caribbean.
- Expand democratic space to sustain inclusive governance.
- Promote gender equality in decision-making power.
- Women’s economic justice
- Protect full economic rights and justice for women.
- Remove structural barriers for gender equality and reshape collective models of development.
- Violence against Women (VAW)
- Eliminate all types and forms of violence against women and girls in Latin America and the Caribbean.
- Sustain respect for women’s bodily integrity and autonomy.
- Climate Change and Environmental Justice
- Address gender inequalities of climate risks.
- Promote community resilience and mitigation actions to climate change with environmental and gender justice.
Grant Amounts and Duration
- For large-sized organisations:
- They can ask for a minimum amount of €200.000and a maximum of €400.000.
- They must submit projects with 2 years of duration.
- For mid-sized organisations:
- They can ask for a minimum amount of €60.000 and a maximum of €100.000.
- They must submit projects with 2 years of duration.
- For grassroots organisations:
- They can ask for a minimum amount of €8.000 and a maximum of €15.000 per year.
- They must present projects of one year of duration and can be renewed for 3 years.
Eligibility Criteria
- The current call aims to select groups, organisations and women’s networks located in the geographic area previously mentioned and the proposals must be aligned with the priority areas specified in the LFS Framework.
- The call includes but is not limited to: associations, unions, national or regional community organisations, foundations (local, national or regional), women’s defenders organisations, women networks, community-based organisations.
- For the purpose of this call, there have been established three categories of organisations to be selected, according to its annual budget, experience and type of work they do: large organisations, mid-sized organisations and grassroots organisations.
- The FMS will promote initiatives led by or that involve the participation and agenda of these groups.

Eligible Countries
- Central America and the Caribbean: Belize, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicargua, Panama and Suriname.
- Andean Countries: Bolivia, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.
- Southern Cone Countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay.
