Call for Proposals: Sustainable Socioeconomic Initiatives in the Cerrado and Caatinga Biomes (Brazil)

Together in Action Project: Empowering Local Communities for Sustainable and Inclusive Futures

Deadline: 10 November, 2025

The Ecos Fund, managed by the Instituto Sociedade, População e Natureza (ISPN), has launched the 45th Call for Proposals to support community-based and civil society organizations working in the Cerrado and Caatinga biomes.

The call is part of the GEF Small Grants Programme (OP8) and is designed to strengthen local initiatives that protect territories, regenerate ecosystems, and promote sustainable livelihoods rooted in traditional knowledge and community autonomy.

The objective of this call is to support organizations in promoting well-being and sustainable socioeconomic practices through actions that generate both local and global environmental benefits. Proposals should be grounded in community participation and contribute to improving living conditions while safeguarding the cultural and ecological heritage of the regions.

Projects may focus on one or more thematic areas, including the sustainable use and community conservation of ecosystems, sustainable production and food security, and the development of social technologies adapted to local realities. Initiatives may also support territorial management and organizational strengthening, particularly when led by women or young people, recognizing their leadership in community resilience and environmental stewardship. Additionally, the call supports projects that advance communication, culture, identity, and traditional knowledge tied to the protection of territories and socio-environmental conservation.

The total amount available is US$ 940,000, approximately R$ 5 million. Funding is offered in two categories: Small Projects may request up to R$150,000, while Consolidation Projects may receive up to R$250,000. This structure allows both emerging and established community organizations to access resources suited to their scale and needs.

By directing support to those who are deeply connected to the land and its cycles, this call seeks to reinforce community leadership in conserving the Cerrado and Caatinga biomes. It strengthens traditional practices, supports sustainable economies, and empowers local communities to continue safeguarding some of Brazil’s most culturally rich and environmentally significant territories.
