The AgriFutures Australia is seeking research proposals for the AgriFutures Ginger Program to support a sustainable, growing and prosperous ginger industry supplying product of the highest quality that is strongly sought after by discerning consumers in Australia and around the world.
To ensure the Program goal is achieved, AgriFutures Australia is seeking research proposals to address key industry priorities including using technology to increase production efficiency and reduce labor inputs, developing options for the control of significant pests and diseases, and investigating new market opportunities.
AgriFutures Australia’s investments are driven by five-year RD&E Plans that address the needs of industries and stakeholders to ensure their priorities are industry demand driven. Their aim is to enhance the profitability and sustainability of their levied rural industries.
They also welcome and encourage your collaboration with other research providers to build the critical research mass necessary to meet their objectives.
Priorities

AgriFutures Australia welcomes Preliminary Research Proposals that address one or more of the specific research priorities listed below:
- Further development and training of the Ginger Ninja Fusarium detection algorithm through grow-out assessments of ginger seed.
- Review of current fungicides for pythium control in ginger and potential new control methods, including new chemistry and/or new application methods for existing chemistry.

AgriFutures Australia also welcomes Preliminary Research Proposals that address the broader research priorities listed below:
- High quality product & sustainable production system: including research on best management practices for ginger production.
- Market opportunities: including research to support the development of new and emerging markets, and innovative products and systems for new consumer segments.
- Technology and innovation: including research to deliver new technologies and big data solutions as well as new and improved tools, systems and strategies for the surveillance, prevention and management of pest, weed and disease threats, or to reduce labor inputs for the industry.
Extension of all research investments to levy payers is a priority for the AgriFutures Ginger Program; all investments made by the Program are required to deliver both research and extension activities and outcomes. They encourage applicants to consider how they will consult and collaborate with the extension program, funded by the AgriFutures Ginger Program, to ensure a collaborative approach to extending the research is developed and included in the submission.
Evaluation Criteria
Proposals should clearly indicate the following:
- How the research will contribute to improving the productivity, profitability and sustainability of the Australian ginger industry; either through further development and training of the Ginger Ninja Fusarium detection algorithm through grow-out assessments of ginger seed, review of current fungicides for pythium control in ginger and potential new control methods, research into market opportunities, research and development of new data and technology opportunities for the ginger industry or research and development of agronomy strategies for ginger production.
- Project benefits for ginger supply chain participants.
- A detailed project plan – including timelines, how the project will be conducted and how this will meet the requirements of the Open Call.
- Who will be undertaking the majority of the work, including statistical analysis (it must be clear if new staff and/or students are to be employed to undertake the work).
- The plan for extension of research outcomes from the project activity work, i.e., how adoption will take place within the industry, beyond the distribution of project summaries and presentations.
- Where relevant, proposals should include collaboration with experts in the field, which may not be located in Australia.
- The researcher’s capability and level of understanding of past research in this field.
