Do you want to learn how to design interventions, strategies and policies for resilient and sustainable food systems in your own local context? Do you want to better understand the global future challenges of food production, the effects on different scales of farming and how to apply a systems dynamics approach for analysing food systems? If yes, then this 2021 Resilient and Sustainable Food Systems for a Food-Secure Future course is for you.

The world is changing and is becoming more unpredictable and uncontrollable. This holds for both social and natural conditions, with climate change and globalisation being major drivers of change in the world. People around the world are increasingly exposed to extreme weather events, economic crises, food crises, disease epidemics, social instability and political conflicts.

The resulting insecurity not only affects the global social and economic systems, but also (local) food systems and their farmers who stand at the basis of food production.

Course Setting

• As a participant you receive an extensive, interactive and participatory training where theory is merged with practice. Course activities will comprise lectures, discussions, group work, case studies, assignments and excursions. Both core and cross-cutting topics will be covered during the course.
• The programme is flexible to suit participants’ needs and participants’ case studies are the basis of the group work. Furthermore, this course creates a unique opportunity to meet with course colleagues from around the world, with similar interest, and to share experiences and learn from each other.

What will you learn?

In this course, your knowledge and skills will be strengthened. After this course, you will:

• Have a deeper understanding on how global development trends and challenges affect farming practices and policies at local and national levels;
• Be able to use various tools and techniques to analyse food systems and to identify critical issues for change;
• Be able to develop innovative and practical oriented interventions, strategies and policies for transition to resilient and sustainable food systems, which are socially, economically and ecologically balanced;
• Understand the role of stakeholders and involve them in making food systems more resilient and sustainable.

Course Date

• Date: Mon 29 March 2021 until Fri 23 April 2021
• Duration: Part-time, 20hrs per week (4 weeks)
• Venue: Facilitated online sessions

Eligibility Criteria

• The Wageningen Centre for Development Innovation (CDI) invites technical staff, policymakers, scientists, private sector professionals and programme / project managers who want to build resilient and sustainable food system in their home countries, to enroll.
• Participants should be proficient in English, and have at least a BSc degree or an equivalent academic qualification and preferably several years of work experience in the agricultural domain.

Application Procedure

1. Register for the course of your interest by clicking the ‘apply’ button on the webpage of this course. A registration form will open;
2. Fill in the required fields of the registration form. Please note to write your date of birth without a zero (e.g. 1-5-1980 instead of 01-05-1980);
3. Before you submit, check your details on the final page of the registration form;
4. After submitting, you will receive a confirmation email. Make sure to directly click on the link in the email to confirm your registration. Without your confirmation, your registration cannot be processed;
5. If you apply as an OKP or MSP-scholarship candidate, you will receive a registration letter for the scholarship at the beginning of the scholarship cycle.
6. If you apply as a self-funded participant: They will forward your request for acceptance to the course leader. This can take some time as it depends on the coordinators’ schedule (1-3 weeks);
7. If you’re accepted into the course programme, they’ll send you an admission letter by e-mail;
8. You receive all required travel documents from us after you are selected for the scholarship (OKP/MSP-scholarship candidates) or when they’ve received your payment (self-funded participant).
