The Process and Technology Improvement Grants (PTIGs) are designed to help state agencies and their community-based or faith-based partners use technology to improve the quality and efficiency of SNAP application and eligibility systems.
These grants support projects that modernize customer service and communication for SNAP clients. Proposals may include developing client self-service tools like chatbots or portals, sending electronic notices and text reminders, and making forms and communications easier to understand. They can also focus on reducing barriers with mobile-friendly services or creating streamlined digital access points for clients.
Grants also aim to strengthen day-to-day SNAP operations. Projects might increase call center capacity, improve automated systems, use OCR or RPA to process documents, or build dashboards for tracking workloads and case progress. Other ideas include policy chatbots for staff or using APIs to improve data flow and reduce repetitive entry.
Another key focus is integrating SNAP with other public benefit programs. Projects could involve building shared applications, enhancing cross-enrollment tools, improving data sharing, and creating tech plans to better coordinate services across programs, where allowed by law.
The estimated total funding for the program is $5,000,000. Grant awards range from a minimum of $20,000 to a maximum of $2,000,000.
Eligible applicants include SNAP state agencies, state and local governments, public and private health or welfare service agencies, Indian Tribal Organizations, public health or educational institutions, and non-profit organizations such as food banks and community-based or faith-based groups.
