The Institut Für Auslandsbeziehungen (ifa) has launched its Artists’ Contacts programme to support the international cooperation of cultural actors. Artists and cultural practitioners from Germany and from transformation or developing countries receive valuable support for projects in contemporary visual arts, architecture, photography, media art and design.
Artists and cultural practitioners from Germany and from transformation or developing countries receive valuable support for projects in contemporary visual arts, architecture, photography, media art and design. Applicants thereby receive the chance to network internationally and to advance the intercultural discourse between Germany and the global South.
Funding Principles
- IFA can make a financial contribution to travel and subsistence expenses for artists, art educators, art theoreticians, architects and designers traveling to Germany from developing and emerging countries.
- German applicants can also receive subsidies for their travel and subsistence costs for developing and emerging countries.
- In case one of the applicants does not have the German citizenship it has to be indicated since when the named person is residing in Germany. The applicant must have been living in Germany for at least 5 years.
- Funding in the home country of applicant without German nationality is inadmissible.
- The committee meets twice a year. Applications with all the requisite documentation must reach ifa by 31 January or by 15 August (the postmark is valid). Submissions after the deadline cannot be considered.
- Applications received are submitted to an independent committee of specialists. Decisions on
- funding are also made on the basis of the budget available to ifa for this purpose and in relation to other applications.
- No justification will be given for the decisions taken. Denied applications cannot be submitted again. Recourse to legal action is out of the question.
- A project that has already started cannot be funded retrospectively. Accrued expenses before their funding decision cannot be considered.
- Projects by students cannot be supported.
- When carrying out a project, expenditure from funds can be made only if compatible with general Federal budgeting principles.
- Financial support by the German Foreign Office or the Goethe‐Institute and by the 'Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen' as well is inadmissible for reasons of budgetary law.
Funding Requirements
- High standards of artistic quality
- The project may not be realized in a commercial context (eg not in a private gallery)
- Co‐operation between German and foreign persons engaged in the cultural sector in terms of art and content is an important funding aspect
- Considerable achievements in its own right by the institution concerned
- Submitting an application implies acceptance of the funding principles and requirements laid down in this document.
Eligibility Criteria
- Artists, curators, art educators, art theorists, architects and designers (as well as institutions) from developing and transition countries who want to carry out a project in Germany.
- Artists, curators, art educators, art theorists, architects and designers (as well as institutions) who want to carry out a project in a developing or transition country.
- Non-German artists, curators, art educators, art theorists, architects and designers (as well as institutions) who have been living in Germany for at least 5 years (proof of residency required) who want to carry out a project in a developing or transition country.
- High quality standard of the planned artistic project.
- In the project, German art and culture workers and art and culture workers from developing and transition countries work together artistically and in terms of content.
- Artists and cultural workers who live in Germany but do not have German citizenship must prove how long they have been living in Germany. The minimum requirement is five years.
- Invitation from a non-commercial cultural or exhibition institution (no private gallery).
- The project may not be realized in a commercial context. A sale of art excludes funding.
- Considerable financial and/or other own contributions by the issuing foreign institution.
