Nominations open for Visual Artist and Craft Maker Awards (UK)

Culture Ireland Regular Grant Scheme

Deadline: 21-Oct-2025

The Visual Artist and Craft Maker Awards (VACMA) is an established programme that provides small grants to support the creative and professional development of visual artists and craft makers across Scotland.

Delivered through partnerships with local authorities and art organisations, VACMA ensures that funding opportunities are accessible and responsive to the needs of local creative communities. Each scheme is managed locally by its partner organisation, helping to build stronger connections between artists and the cultural networks in their area.

VACMA offers fixed bursaries of £500 and £1,000, designed to give artists the financial flexibility to focus on developing their practice, experimenting with new ideas, or pursuing opportunities that will enhance their careers. The programme encourages creativity, exploration, and innovation, supporting artists at all stages of their professional journey—from emerging creators to experienced practitioners seeking to refine their craft or embark on new artistic directions.

To be eligible for VACMA funding, applicants must be practicing visual artists or craft makers living or maintaining a studio space within the local authority area to which they are applying. Previous recipients must have submitted their End of Project Report before reapplying. Part-time students are welcome to apply as long as they can provide proof of their part-time status and confirm that the proposed project is independent of their academic studies.

The bursaries can be used for a broad range of creative activities that support artistic growth. Artists may use the funding for professional training, workshops, mentoring, or skill development, as well as research and experimentation with new techniques, materials, and ideas. Support may also go toward residencies, sustainable practices using renewable or low-impact materials, and the creation of new work for exhibitions or public presentations. Essential equipment that directly contributes to creative development may also be eligible for support.

Applications are assessed based on the artist’s commitment to their practice, the potential for creative development, and the feasibility of the proposed project. VACMA prioritises applicants who can demonstrate a clear plan for how the funding will advance their work and lead to meaningful artistic outcomes. In addition to artistic merit, the programme places a strong emphasis on supporting equality, diversity, and inclusion, as well as environmentally sustainable practices within the arts sector.

VACMA aims to create accessible entry points into professional practice, particularly for artists at the early stages of their careers or those who have faced barriers to artistic development. The programme often prioritises individuals who are new to public funding or have had limited opportunities to expand their practice. Projects that actively consider and reduce their environmental impact are also encouraged.

Through its commitment to inclusivity, innovation, and sustainability, the Visual Artist and Craft Maker Awards continue to play a vital role in nurturing Scotland’s creative talent. By providing targeted financial support, VACMA helps artists gain the confidence, skills, and resources needed to take their work to new heights—strengthening the cultural landscape and enriching communities across the country.
