Erasmus Huis and Komunitas Salihara invite dancers/performers and visual artists from the greater Jakarta area to audition for a role in the interdisciplinary art project La Sirene, by Dutch artists Richard Kofi and Junadry Leocaria.
The ocean is an endless archive of secrets from their past. Many communities around the world that depend on the sea for their livelihood and economy, share myths about the wisdom held in underwater worlds. The title ‘La Sirène’ refers to a Caribbean mythical being, that manifests as a beautiful woman with a fish’s tale. She lives at the border between the ordinary and the magical maritime and is the keeper of its hidden wisdom. Through dance, visual art, and collaboration with local creatives Leocaria and Kofi explore the ways in which Indonesian, West African, Dutch, and Caribbean (hi)stories ebb and flow into one another.
Junadry Leocaria (1985, Willemstad) is an eye-catching appearance in the Dutch urban dance theater field. She developed her signature style by combining Contemporary dance with Waacking and Caribbean Tambu. Her knowledge of Caribbean immaterial heritage plays a big role in her storytelling and aesthetics. Artist and curator Richard Kofi (1988, Wageningen) makes drawings, collages, and video work in which abstract and figurative realities intertwine. This allows him to lay bare how past, present, and future inform one another. Collaboration and co-creation play a significant part in Kofi’s practice.
Funding Information
- Each chosen dancer/visual artist will receive a honorarium of IDR 5.000.000,- per person for their contribution (includes 2 performances). In addition to this they will each receive a per diem of IDR 100.000 per day. Meals, per diem and honorarium will be provided by Komunitas Salihara.
Open Call Requirements
- Participants should be available from January 9th to February 5th, 2023. The preparation/rehearsal period will also include meetings and conversations across disciplines, that will take place at the residency of Komunitas Salihara. The dance production will be performed from February 6th to February 8th.
- Special Requirements for Dancers:
- During the dance audition you will learn a choreography from Junadry, furthermore you will have to prepare a two minute solo.
- If you can dance more than one style, please make sure you show this during your audition. They will finish the audition day with several assignments, in order to see how you work in the group.
- Dancers are also expected to meet the following requirements:
- 16+
- A motivated and passionate dancer and you are willing to work hard in order to create a beautiful piece.
- Have to prepare a two minute solo. In this solo you show your skills as a dancer.
- Available from January 10th until February 12th, 2023
- Available in during the day and/or evening
- Living in the greater Jakarta area
- All dance styles are welcome for example: street & club styles, contemporary, classical ballet, traditional dance, acrobatics etc.
- Specific requirements for visual artist:
- You need to be motivated, creative and able to think out of the box. You are also willing to work hard in order to make La Sirene a big success. Please send a digital link of your artwork in the Google Form provided at the end of this page.
- Visual artists are also expected to meet the following requirements:
