Deadline: 30-Jun-21
UNESCO is inviting applications for the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage in Latin America and the Caribbean to protect underwater cultural heritage and promote its relevance within the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, thus recognizing that one of the main challenges for its protection lies in providing knowledge and adequate capacities for its study, conservation, and management.
This initiative, which aims at training university students and teachers in archaeology from the region, has received the financial and technical support from the International Programme for Maritime Heritage of the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands.
The training course is organized by UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean (Havana, Cuba) and UNESCO Cluster Office in Quito and Representation to Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela (Quito, Ecuador) with the support of the Cluster Office for the Caribbean (Kingston, Jamaica) and in coordination with all other offices in the region. Additionally, the course counts on the financial and technical support of the International Programme for Maritime Heritage of the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE-OCW).
Course learning contents
The learning contents of the course have been built from:
- The UNESCO Training Manual for the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage in Latin America and the Caribbean, which was adapted to the regional context thanks to the efforts of recognized international experts and the financial support of the International Programme for Maritime Heritage of the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE-OCW). This manual, which constitutes the foundational basis of the course, will allow participants to gain an in-depth knowledge on UNESCO 2001 Convention as well as on various disciplines and procedures to enable the appropriate study and management of underwater cultural heritage.
- The Rules concerning activities directed at Underwater Cultural Heritage, established in the Annex of the 2001 UNESCO Convention, which are highly useful and widely recognized and applied by underwater archaeologists. The Rules contain regulations as to how a project is to be designed; the competence and the qualifications required for persons undertaking interventions; planning the funding of excavation projects; documentation of archaeological excavations under water; and methodologies on conservation and site management.
Course Duration
The training course is a ten (10) weeks long, and will cover approximately 65 hours, that is to say, 6.5 hours per week, including synchronic and non-synchronic learning activities
