The Jacqueline Nonkels Prize is an annual award granted to an individual or organization that plays a significant role in raising awareness, promoting, or preserving Belgium’s surrealist heritage.
The award acknowledges those who, even partially, contribute to the conservation, restoration, or public recognition of this important cultural legacy.
The prize, amounting to €5,000, is aimed at furthering the visibility and safeguarding of Belgian surrealism. It may be given for scholarly research, publications, or other efforts that scientifically illuminate surrealist heritage, whether within Belgium or internationally.
It also supports initiatives led by Belgian institutions that work to improve awareness and physical access to surrealist art—through acquisitions, restorations, exhibitions, or educational programs.
Eligibility is open to both individuals and legal entities who can demonstrate a meaningful contribution to the preservation and promotion of Belgium’s surrealist traditions. The selection process for the prize is carried out by a jury, which evaluates submissions based on several thoughtful criteria.
For research projects or publications, the jury considers the originality of the subject, the necessity of funding, the potential reach and community benefit, as well as the feasibility of the project’s financial and implementation plan.
They also look for long-term value, continuity, and topical relevance—such as projects linked to recent discoveries or exhibitions.
In awareness-building initiatives, factors such as the condition and security of the site, its symbolic value to surrealism, the project’s added community value, and its execution quality play a major role.
The jury also evaluates the dynamism of the project initiators, the reliability of the budget, and plans for continuity and future impact.
Projects with the potential to inspire broader structural changes or be replicated elsewhere are especially valued.
The Jacqueline Nonkels Prize thus celebrates projects that not only honor surrealism’s past but also ensure its lasting legacy for future generations.
