Nominations are open for DIRCO 2017 Annual Ubuntu Awards to celebrate South African citizens, who, through their Integrity, Passion, Patriotism and Humility have raised the South African flag high on an international stage.
The year 2017 marks the centenary of Oliver Tambo’s life. Therefore, the theme of the Ubuntu Awards will be: “In his footsteps.” The Ubuntu Awards thus recognise South African citizens who embody the principles of OR Tambo, namely: Integrity, Passion, Patriotism and Humility.
In 2015, the annual Ubuntu Awards were launched to celebrate South African citizens who play an active role in projecting a positive image of South Africa internationally. Through excellence in their chosen fields, these proud South Africans serve as global ambassadors of our nation.
Award Categories
- Ubuntu Economic Diplomacy Award (Africa): A South African business operating in at least two (2) other countries inside of the African continent which has positively impacted South Africa’s image by:
- Displaying good business practice and governance.
- Investing in corporate social responsibility programmes in the countries in which they operate.
- Creating jobs in the countries in which they operate.
- Displaying innovation in responding to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Ubuntu Economic Diplomacy Award (Global): A South African business operating in at least one (1) African country and two (2) countries beyond African borders that has positively impacted South Africa’s image by:
- Displaying good business practice and governance.
- Investing in corporate social responsibility programmes in the countries in which they operate.
- Creating jobs in the countries in which they operate.
- Displaying innovation in responding to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Ubuntu Social Responsibility Award: A South African Non-Governmental Organisation that has projected a positive image of South Africa in at least two (2) countries abroad by acting for the benefit of society in that country.
- Ubuntu Arts and Cultural Diplomacy Award (Veteran) – Public Vote: An individual or organization that has promoted a positive image of South African through arts and culture and/or facilitated cultural exchanges between South Africa and no fewer than two (2) other countries. Individuals must have been practicing their art-form for a minimum of 20 years.
- Ubuntu Arts and Cultural Diplomacy Award (Youth) – Public Vote: An individual or organization that has promoted a positive image of South African through arts and culture and/or facilitated cultural exchanges between South Africa and a minimum of two (2) other countries. Individuals must be under the age of 35 as of 1 January 2017.
- Ubuntu Sports Diplomacy Award: An individual or organisation that has, through their excellence in the field of sport, promoted a positive image of South Africa globally.
- O.R. Tambo Lifetime Achievement Award in Diplomacy Award: An award for a South African diplomat who has dedicated their lives to serving South Africa with distinction during or leading up to the new democratic dispensation and in the process has projected a positive image of South Africa by displaying the principals of O.R. Tambo –Integrity, Passion, Patriotism, and Humility.
- O.R. Tambo Lifetime Achievement Award: An award for a South African citizen who has dedicated their lives to serving South Africa with distinction during or leading up to the new democratic dispensation and in the process has projected a positive image of South Africa by displaying the principals of O.R. Tambo – Integrity, Passion, Patriotism, and Humility.
Selection Criteria
All nominees for the Ubuntu Awards should meet the broad criteria of:
- Creating a favourable image for South Africa.
- Engaging with, and influencing, the international public
- Making a sustainable and enduring impact.
- Embodying the values of Integrity, Passion, Patriotism and Humility.
- Celebrating and promoting African unity and diversity.
