Applicants are invited to apply for Young Carer Bursary Programme that aims to help relieve the financial pressure on young carers to undertake part-time employment, in addition to managing their educational and caring responsibilities.
The provision of a bursary increases the opportunity for young carers to remain in, or return to, education or training leading to improved employment opportunities and long-term finances.
The bursaries will reduce financial pressure and support young carers to complete, or return to education or training whilst continuing in their caring role.
Funding Information
The Australian Government has committed $1 million for bursaries in 2017. The Young Carer Bursary Programme will grant 333 Bursaries, all at $3,000 in 2017.
Benefits
The bursaries can be spent on whatever young carers need to help them with their education at school, university or in training. This could include (but is not limited to):
- education costs such as course fees, equipment and supplies, text books, tutoring, school uniforms and extra-curricular activities
- respite support to give young carers time to study and attend classes or training
- accommodation or transport support to help young carers attend school, university or training
- financial support for the family, freeing up money for education or reducing the need for young carers to work; and
- emotional support.
Eligibility Criteria
Those eligible to apply for a Young Carer Bursary for 2017 must:
- be a young carer
- be studying at secondary school level or above in 2017 (usually aged 12 or over)
- be studying or training an approved course** either full-time or part-time in 2017
- not already be qualified with a Degree or Advanced Diploma
- be aged 25 years and under (be 25 for the whole of the bursary year; so born in 1992 or later for 2017 bursaries)
- not be in receipt of another bursary or scholarship in 2017
- be an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident.
