Applicants are invited to apply for “Southeast Asia and the Diaspora: Gender, Labor, and Performance” conference.
SEASGRAD will host its first annual conference at the University of California, Riverside. They intend this conference to provide a platform for engaging with interdisciplinary research in Southeast Asian Studies, to create a communal space for generative dialogue and networking, and to support emerging student-scholars and artists in the field. They invite scholars and artists current and past undergraduate and graduate students to explore the ways in which gender, labor and performance intersect in Southeast Asia and the diaspora.
SEASGRAD is looking for submissions on a range of topics related to their conference keywords of gender, labor, and performance. While they ask that participants engage at least one of the conference keywords, submissions might also address one of the following questions:
- How do Southeast Asian histories of migration, trade, colonization, revolution, and state-making shape gender, labor and performance? Inversely, how do contemporary gender relations, performance, and forms of labor come to re-articulate these long histories?
- What do processes of writing and performing narratives reveal about knowledge production on gender, performance, and labor in “Southeast Asia and the diaspora”?
- What generative tensions in methodology, theory, and practice emerge from examining gender, labor, and performance through the geopolitical space of Southeast Asia, Southeast Asian diasporas, and/or beyond the specific objects often linked with these places?
Eligibility Criteria
- They invite scholars and artists—current and past undergraduate and graduate students—to explore the ways in which gender, labor and performance intersect in Southeast Asia and the diaspora.
- They welcome proposals in the format of papers, performances, workshops, and other experimental approaches. Moreover, welcome proposals that engage in interdisciplinary methods and inquiry, such as those that draw on the intellectual formations of, but not limited to, critical area studies, critical race/ethnic studies, anthropology, cultural studies, dance studies, disability studies, feminist studies, geography, performance studies, queer studies, sound studies, and visual culture.
- There is no registration fee.

- and, if applicable, technical requirements.
