The Habitat for Humanity Young Leaders Build 2019 campaign brings together young people from across the Asia-Pacific region to support families in need of decent housing. Young people volunteer, fundraise and speak out for the need for decent and affordable housing as a way out of poverty and toward self-reliance.
As part of the 2019 campaign, Habitat for Humanity is currently inviting eligible youth organizations and individuals to submit Project proposals for the 2019 Habitat for Humanity Young Leaders Build advocacy grants.
Objectives
- Motivate young people to undertake policy-oriented advocacy activities during the HYLB campaign from December 2018 to April 2019;
- Encourage and support youths to raise their voices on public policy issues on land and housing; and
- Provide opportunities for young people to make policy asks through creative and innovative tactics.
Advocacy Thematic Areas
The grants will support advocacy activities that aim to impact policies by influencing decision makers, or change practices or systems in the following thematic areas:
- Housing – How can decent and affordable housing be part of the design of sustainable, inclusive communities in both urban and rural areas? What laws at the local or national level guarantee every person’s right to decent housing?
- Disaster resilience – Are existing laws and regulations providing efficient and effective support to people affected by disasters? How can governments consistently provide resources so communities and families are empowered to reduce their disaster exposure and vulnerabilities?
- Gender – How can communities and policy makers ensure that gender discrimination in land and property rights due to patriarchal attitudes and cultural practices is eliminated? How can communities work with other stakeholders to eliminate gender-based violence at home? How can women be more empowered economically to access adequate housing?
- Slum upgrading – Can communities dialogue with and get the assurance of local authorities that people living in slums will have tenure security? What resources can be made available to urban slum dwellers so they can upgrade their homes and communities?
- Security of tenure – What can policymakers do to ensure that everyone has access to land for shelter without fear of eviction?
Funding Information
- Individuals and/or organizations can submit proposals for funding of up to US$1,000 per application.
- Each applicant may send in more than one application for consideration.
Eligibility Criteria
- Youth organizations, groups and individuals in the Asia-Pacific region where Habitat for Humanity has offices are eligible.
- Habitat for Humanity’s national organizations can also encourage and facilitate the participation of potential applicants.
