National Environment Trust Fund (NETFUND) has announced a call for applications for the fourth cycle of Green Innovations Award.
National Environment Trust Fund (NETFUND) is a State Corporation established by the Environmental Management and Coordination Act of 1999. Their mandate is “To facilitate research intended to further the requirements of environmental management, capacity building, environmental awards, environmental publications, scholarships and grants”.
NETFUND’s vision is “Sustainable financing available for environmental management in Kenya”. Their mission is “To mobilize, manage and avail resources for; environmental awards, capacity building, research and publications, scholarships and grants in Kenya.”
Themes
NETFUND GIA will reward and recognize initiatives that contributes to the following themes:
- Attainment of 10% tree cover: Priority areas will include; Rehabilitation and restoration of community, private and public forests, Seedlings production; Technologies for planting, monitoring, surveillance and management of forests; Alternatives to biomass as energy for cooking; Alternative subsistence livelihood sources for communities living in and around forests.
- Air pollution control: Under this theme priority areas will include; Policy and regulations to manage air pollution; Technologies and innovations that prevent or reduce indoor air pollution and emissions from industries and transport sector.
- Waste management: This theme will focus on the development and implementation of enabling policy and regulation that promotes energy and resource efficiency in the manufacturing sector and efficient waste management; Technologies and innovations on 4Rs of waste management: Reduction, reuse, recycling and recovery.
- Climate resilience: Priority areas under this theme will include: Initiatives in Climate information and early warning systems to help small holder farmers, women and other vulnerable groups cope with droughts, floods and other climate change-induced disasters; Climate Smart Agricultural technologies and practices that enhance Crop diversification and adoption of improved drought tolerant crops; Improve water harvesting; Improve irrigation; Reduce post-harvest losses; Uptake of related insurance.
- Environmental education and knowledge management: Focus areas under this theme will include, efficient waste management; Protection of forest resources and restoration of degraded forest landscapes (including tree planting and growing); Climate change adaptation and mitigation: early warning and climate smart agriculture; Air quality management.
Award Information
- Winners will be recognized and awarded (3 winners in each of the 5 themes and 3 best counties).
- All winners EXCEPT the counties will receive cash prices, certificates and trophies. Winners will receive Kes 250,000; 2nd runner up Kes 200,000 and 3rd runner up Kes 150,000. The best 3 counties will receive a certificate of recognition and trophy.
- Winning entrants shall permit NETFUND to use any photographs, video, sound, written or other material as it sees fit and without restriction.
- NETFUND reserves the right to withdraw any award obtained through fraud or deceitful means.
Capacity Building
- Initiatives that demonstrate commercial viability will be selected for capacity building
- NETFUND and its partners will provide technical and business support services to selected initiatives
- The best innovations will benefit from coaching and training to enable them scale up or expand into the market, as well as linkages to market and financial opportunities
Criteria
- To participate the initiative must be located within Kenya.
- Eligible entries are those within the categories and thematic areas ONLY.
- NETFUND staff and families, partners and sponsors are not allowed to apply.
- All entries must be a truthful representation of the entrant’s involvement, with a proven record.
- The person named on the entry form will be the used as the point of contact by the NETFUND. If the name of the nominated contact person changes, NETFUND must be contacted immediately.
- For organizations, institutions or groups, the applicant MUST be an authorized representative.
Judging Process
- Eligible entries will be judged using a criteria based on five key parameters: relevance of the initiative in addressing the environmental problem, innovation of the initiative, commercial viability, social-economic and environmental impact as well as the sustainability of the initiative.
- Entries will be judged by a panel of judges. All entrants agree to be bound by the decisions of the judges. No correspondence, telephone, email or communication of any kind will be entered into in relation to decisions reached.
- Shortlisted entrants may be required to provide additional information and should cooperate with the judges during the field verification exercise.
- All material submitted in support of an entry is warranted by the entrant to be their property and is entered without any encumbrances by third parties.
- The finalist may be required to attend or provide project information for NETFUND promotional activities.
- Unsuccessful applicants will be notified.
