The Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) of the OSCE is currently implementing a project in Ukraine entitled “Advancing the Human Dimension of Security in Ukraine”. As part of this project, ODIHR is organizing a five-day Training on Human Rights Monitoring for up to 25 human rights defenders in Ukraine, with a focus on human rights in southern and eastern Ukraine.
The aim of this training is to enable human rights defenders to independently carry out objective human rights monitoring activities, based on international standards, with a solid understanding of safety and security issues that might arise during these activities.
During the training, special attention will be paid to using digital tools to verify evidence of human rights violations. The training is based on interactive adult learning techniques. The training sessions will combine theory and practice and participants will be engaged in role play scenarios.
ODIHR will select participants on a competitive basis. Selected participants for the training will also be eligible for ODIHR’s follow-up activities that focus on supporting monitoring of human rights defenders’ work in the field with expertise and capacity building activities.
Training Information
- When: 25 February – 1 March 2019
- Where: Congress Hotel Puscha, Yunkerova Street 20, Kyiv, Ukraine
- Costs: The training is offered free of charge to selected participants, including travel and accommodation expenses.
Criteria
- The training is aimed at human rights defenders who are or will be monitoring human rights in southern and eastern Ukraine. ODIHR is dedicated to providing trainings for human rights defenders regardless of gender, ethnicity or age. Human rights defenders from southern and eastern Ukraine, and human rights defenders working on Roma issues, LGBTI and women’s rights are especially encouraged to apply.
- The following criteria will be used for selection of the participants:
- Proven track record as a human rights defender
- Relevance of the training for future human rights activities in the regions of southern and/or eastern Ukraine
- Motivation to attend this training
- Limited or no experience in human rights monitoring
- No or limited previous training in safety and security
- Computer literacy
- Available for the full duration of the training
- The language of the event will be English and Ukrainian/Russian. Simultaneous translation from and to English-Ukrainian/Russian will be available.
- Please note that ODIHR only informs successful applicants about the outcome of the selection process in the week of 11 February 2019.
