The Open Society Foundation for South Africa (OSF-SA) is seeking a partner to implement a research project on understanding South Africa’s post-colonial democratic trajectory. The project will include a comparative analysis of South Africa and selected post-colonial societies in Africa, Asia or Latin America.
This open call is targeted at a registered academic or research institution; independent consultant; or civil society organisation with a grounding in comparative post-colonial studies.
The purpose of the research is to empirically examine whether South Africa’s current democratic trajectory is exceptional and/or comparable to other post-liberation experiences. The project will include a comparative analysis of South Africa and selected post-colonial societies in Africa, Asia or Latin America. The research seeks to identify those traits that characterise (or have shaped) the emergent trajectories of the selected cases, and discuss the corresponding implications for the consolidation of constitutional democracy in South Africa. The emerging insights must provoke discourse on South Africa’s post-liberation struggle and transformation.
Key Activities
- Conduct literature reviews and key stakeholder interviews to address the objectives and questions.
- Convene a seminar or round table discussion with a select group of reviewers and relevant stakeholders to discuss the emerging analysis and from this process gather additional perspectives to consolidate the final research report.
- Draft and submit a final research report to OSF-SA.
