Police and Human Rights
This course is designed for researchers, campaigners and activists working on police and human rights. The course will give you a basic understanding of the international human rights laws and standards applicable in law enforcement. Through exercises, Amnesty research material, videos, and self-directed learning resources, learners will take a detailed look at a wide range of topics related to police and human rights.
Learning Outcomes:
After completing this course, you will be able to:
- Explain what the leading international human rights treaties and the related international human rights obligations are.
- Understand the general principles applicable in law enforcement.
- Describe the principles guiding the use of force.
- Understand when police may use firearms and when not.
- Understand how police must be accountable for the use of force and firearms.
- Recognise a range of common less-lethal weapons.
- Understand their potential lawful purpose and use, as well as the risks they pose.
- Understand how law enforcement officials are supposed to use them (and how not).
- Describe the principles guiding the right to freedom of peaceful assembly, including possible restrictions that may be placed on it.
- Understand how the term “peaceful assembly” should be interpreted.
- Describe the responsibilities of organisers and the state regarding peaceful assembly.
- List the challenges of policing assemblies.
