The Hague Academy for Local Governance announces Course on “Migration and Local Authorities” (24 February – 6 March 2020)

Deadline: 23 January 2020

The Hague Academy for Local Governance is seeking applications for its “Migration and Local Authorities” course which will take place in The Hague from 24 February to 6 March 2020.

The world is currently witnessing the highest levels of human displacement on record. According to the latest figures of UNHCR, an estimated 70.8 million people worldwide have been forced to leave their homes. Among them are nearly 25.9 million refugees. Local governments are at the forefront of the response to these developments, providing essential services, and developing innovative solutions to complex and rapidly changing circumstances.

In this two-week course, The Hague Academy will explore the role of local authorities in receiving and integrating refugees. The Hague Academy will address several dilemmas confronting local authorities, including how to mainstream the specific needs of migrants and refugees in local development planning, and how to boost economic opportunities and maintain the delivery of inclusive services to both migrants as well as host communities (i.e. health care, education, waste management).

What can The Hague Academy learn from experiences in camp settings? What are the lessons learned from governments opting to integrate refugees into the local community? How can they maintain social cohesion in communities affected by a large influx of migrants?

In exploring these issues, the course will highlight the latest developments in the field, spotlight case studies, and reflect on the practical experiences of the experts and participants.
