ECOSOC Consultative Status: An Opportunity for NGOs to take Part in UN Deliberations

The United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner (OHCHR) is seeking applications through its UN Voluntary Fund for Indigenous Peoples to to attend the 16th session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and the 10th session of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) was established by the Human Rights Council, the UN’s main human rights body, in 2007 under Resolution 6/36 as a subsidiary body of the Council.

The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) is a high- level advisory body to the Economic and Social Council. The Forum was established on 28 July 2000 by resolution 2000/22, with the mandate to deal with indigenous issues related to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health and human rights.

The special theme for 16th session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues “Tenth Anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples: measures taken to implement the Declaration”. More specifically, the Permanent Forum:
