The City of Onkaparinga is pleased to announce the Australia Day Awards to recognise local individuals and groups who have made an outstanding contribution to the communities during the year.
Nomination Categories
Nomination categories include:
- Citizen of the Year: Nominees have demonstrated outstanding contribution and community services in areas such as: education, health, fundraising, charitable and voluntary services, business, environment or any other area that contributes to the advancement and wellbeing of our communities.
- Young Citizen of the Year: nominees must be aged 30 years or less on 26 January 2023.
- Little Hero of the Year: nominees must be aged 12 years or less on 26 January 2023.
- Sportsperson of the Year: Achievement must be outstanding. Consideration will generally be given to the efforts of people who have demonstrated leadership on and off the field, and inspired participation and involvement in sport.
- Community Event of the Year: This award recognises the contribution to our community of individuals or groups who are not Australian Citizens.
- Active Citizenship (new category for non-Australian Citizens): Nominees have staged an outstanding community event during the previous year within the City of Onkaparinga. The individuals or group should be based within our region. The award may be presented to non-resident individuals or groups for an event staged outside the city if, in the opinion of the assessing committee members, the event has outstanding significance for our communities.
Eligibility Criteria
- Nominees must be Australian citizens.
- Nominees should reside in the City of Onkaparinga, however non-residents who have made a significant contribution to our communities may be considered.
- The recognised service should not be connected with the employment of the recipient unless the service was beyond the reasonable call of duty, or the achievement is of significant importance to the community.
- City of Onkaparinga Elected Members and staff are not eligible to receive awards for achievement associated with their role or employment responsibilities. Other achievements by elected members or staff such as a sporting or business pursuit can be recognised in the same way as any other member of the community.
Assessment Process
- Nominations will be considered by a council committee.
- The judging of the nominees will be based on the information provided in and attached to the nomination form and the committee’s terms of reference.
- The committee will determine the recipients of the awards and the committee’s decision will be final.
