Apply for Creative Communities Scheme in New Zealand

#image_title

Deadline: 31-Aug-2025

The Ashburton District Council is inviting applications for its Creative Communities Scheme (CCS), which funds a wide range of artistic projects across music, dance, visual arts, and community workshops. The scheme supports over 1,800 individuals and groups across New Zealand every year, aiming to enrich local communities through artistic engagement.

While there is no fixed upper limit on the funding you can request, most CCS grants awarded are under $2,000. The scheme covers materials for art activities, venue and equipment hire, short-term personnel or administrative costs, and promotional expenses for events. However, it does not support ongoing administrative costs, already completed projects, travel to out-of-town events, food, or the purchase of equipment like cameras or costumes. It also excludes entry fees, prize money, royalties, and debt payments.

To be eligible, projects must take place within the applicant’s city or district, be completed within 12 months of approval, and not begin before funding is granted. Projects should create local benefits and cannot already be funded by Creative New Zealand’s other programmes. Fundraising events, venue development, school curriculum-based activities, and projects primarily focused on non-arts areas such as health or education are not eligible.

The scheme is open to a variety of creative initiatives. Eligible activities include community performances, workshops in arts and crafts, creation of community films or murals, festivals celebrating local talent, artist residencies, and seminars for artistic development. Projects should encourage participation, celebrate cultural diversity, or enable young people to actively engage in the arts.

Examples include theatre performances by community groups, Māori or Pasifika art workshops, migrant community exhibitions, and collaborative projects involving diverse backgrounds or those with disabilities. It also supports youth-led creative initiatives such as public art, short films, music workshops, and youth art exhibitions.

This grant is a valuable opportunity for individuals and groups to bring artistic ideas to life and strengthen the cultural fabric of their local communities.
