The UNESCO Transculture program is pleased to launch the Call for Applications for the Transculture Scholarship Program and will offer 24 scholarships to attend a face-to-face capacity building program on the subject of book publishing and creative writing.
The courses are coordinated by Leonardo Padura, recognized Cuban writer, Princesa de Asturias laureate and academic member of four institutions of the Association of Academies of the Spanish Language. They will take place in Havana, Cuba, in Spanish.
Transcultural: Integrating Cuba, the Caribbean and the European Union through Culture and Creativity is the largest UNESCO program in Latin America and the Caribbean. Funded by the European Union (EU), it was launched in 2020 and will end in December 2023. The program aims to harness diversity and build bridges between people and cultures from different linguistic areas. It is structured around two components: the first focuses on strengthening the skills and abilities of young culture professionals and the second on enhancing opportunities through knowledge transfer and exchange.

- The UNESCO Transculture Program Scholarship Plan will cover the academic, travel and accommodation expenses of a total of 24 selected participants. This includes:
- the course tuition and didactic material;
- round trip flights, of being necessary;
- transit visa (for international participants)
- accommodation in Havana (for international participants);
- 3 meals daily with non-alcoholic beverages.
- Capacity building
- The capacity building program consists of 2 face-to-face courses (of 2 weeks duration and 30 hours each) on creative literature,
- publishing and the publishing cycle. Each course will accept 12 participants (different for the two courses) and will open with a master class by Leonardo Padura.
- The courses will take place in the Ven-tú cultural space, founded by writer Leonardo Padura, photographer Carlos Torres Cairo and publisher Claudia Acevedo. Come-you organizes activities aimed at all the actors involved in the world of the book. It focuses on the training of writers, the promotion of reading, the production of books and the encounter between literature and other art forms.
Eligibility Criteria
- Culture professionals (approved degree in any of the cultural and creative fields included in the Programme, or specialized training in any of the cultural and creative fields included in the Programme, or work experience in any of the cultural and creative fields included in the Programme in the Programme).
- Persons with comprehended ages between 18 and 35 years.
- Spanish speakers (high level or native).
- The Transculture Program Scholarship Plan supports equality of opportunity for the promotion of cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue. Therefore, applications from young professionals of any culture, race, ethnicity, religion or disability are welcome.
- Priority will be given to applicants who have not received any prior funding from the European Union and/or international organisations.
- Beneficiaries of previous Transculture Program call-ups are not eligible.
- Persons with nationality and permanent residence in one of the following 17 Caribbean countries: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados,Belize,Cuba,Dominica,Dominican Republic,Grenada,Guyana,Haiti,Jamaica,Montser rat,Saint Kitts and Nevis,Saint Lucia,Saint Vincent and the G renadines,Suriname ,Trinidad and Tobago
Please note: Persons traveling to Cuba must have international medical insurance or contract travel insurance to attend the course.
