Call for Proposals: Destination Horizon Grant Programme (Canada)

Deadline: 22-Jan-2026

The Destination Horizon Grant Programme provides support to researchers affiliated with eligible Canadian postsecondary institutions to build capacity, foster existing partnerships, and further develop networks and/or consortia with European Union and other “associated countries” researchers.

Destination Horizon Grants are valued at up to $15,000 for one year and require additional support in the form of eligible cash contributions equivalent to 100% of the amount requested from SSHRC, which must come from the host institution.

Applicants must demonstrate their ability to secure at least the minimum matching funding by including a letter of support from the host institution confirming the amounts and types of contributions provided. Complementary funding from SSHRC research grants or other research funding agencies may be used, provided there is no duplication of financial support for the same budget expenses.

Eligible cash contributions include expenses for the direct costs of research and/or research-related activities directly related to achieving the objectives for which the grant was awarded, following the Tri-agency Guide on Financial Administration. Compensation for faculty cannot be counted as an eligible contribution; however, the cost of releasing faculty from teaching duties to participate in and administer the project is eligible.

Eligible in-kind contributions include non-monetary resources such as specialized skills, advice, access to equipment or data sets, and the time of individuals (non-faculty) from partner organizations essential to carrying out the project.

To be eligible, applicants must have an affiliation with a Canadian postsecondary institution and demonstrate readiness to develop networks and/or consortia with EU and other associated countries’ researchers, with the goal of applying to a Horizon Europe—Pillar II call.

Postdoctoral researchers and students are not eligible as applicants or co-applicants. Federal scientists must ensure their proposed activities are not related to their mandate or normal duties. Grant funds must be administered by an eligible Canadian postsecondary institution, and institutions must complete an eligibility process through SSHRC before applying.

Applications can include co-applicants affiliated with eligible Canadian or international institutions and collaborators who contribute significantly to the project, including private sector or federal government participants. Individuals may only hold one Destination Horizon Grant at a time, and postsecondary institutions may submit up to three applications per deadline.

Successful applicants will report on the use of grant funds, funded activities, and outcomes. Eligible applications will be selected through a randomized selection process, and results will be communicated to applicants and institutions via SSHRC portals.

The deadline for applications is 22 January 2026.
