Apply for a grant to support a research project aimed at generating evidence on women’s collective action in agri-food systems, namely processes, outcomes and learning from MENA and South Asia.
The CGIAR Generating Evidence and New Directions for Equitable Results (GENDER) Impact Platform aims to catalyze research on gender in agriculture and food systems to achieve more equitable, sustainable, productive, and climate-resilient food systems.
At the end of the grant, the project is expected to deliver the following outputs, for inclusion in the GENDER Platform Resource Hub:
- Research instruments/tools produced (survey questionnaire/s, interview guides, manuals, protocols, etc.) for open access.
- Final research design aligning with standards for robust research including analysis plan.
- Anonymized data set following FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles.
- One or more working paper(s), under the GENDER Platform Working Paper Series.
- Evidence explainer(s) for the GENDER Platform resource hub.
- Webinar in the GENDER Platform webinar series.
- Blog post(s)/op ed(s) in the GENDER Platform resource hub or elsewhere.
- A policy brief with a set of 10 key messages from the study.
Objectives and Scope
- The Evidence Module under the GENDER Impact Platform will provide a grant for one research project aimed at generating evidence using appropriate, rigorous, and cuttingedge methods both quantitative and qualitative methods and tools on the topic “Women’s collective action in agri-food systems: Processes, outcomes and learning from MENA and South Asia”.
- They invite proposals from interdisciplinary research teams that can undertake comparative analysis of the processes, outcomes and impacts of collective action of women in agrifood systems in MENA and South Asia and distill lessons and principles to design strategies that can be replicated.
- The study should fulfill the following objectives:
- Review the literature around women’s collective action in MENA and South Asia to bring forth similarities and divergences.
- Map the formal and informal collective action in agriculture and the degree and nature of participation of women.
- Critically analyze the factors influencing the effective participation of and benefits for women, using an intersectional lens.
- Using representative case studies, take a closer look at the women’s collectives in both regions to understand the possibilities for stimulating gender transformative change.
- Design potential interventions in MENA to foster more effective collective action for women, based on actionable insights drawn from the research.
Funding Information
- One (1) grant of a maximum of USD 150,000 will be awarded through a competitive selection process. The maximum duration for the awarded grant is 15 months with an estimated start date of September 2023.
- USD 125,000 will be disbursed in 2023 and USD 25,000 in 2024 based on achievements of key milestones.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applications must be led by a CGIAR Center, and satisfy the following eligibility criteria:
- Demonstrate the ability to conduct research to international standards of excellence in the topic proposed.
- Demonstrate strong and equitable partnerships, across the CGIAR and especially with national agricultural research systems (NARS) and other low- and middle-income country partners. Proposals must clearly show meaningful, collaborative relationships through management and scientific contributions, and capacity and learning exchange. The added value arising from bringing together complementary expertise and partnerships must be clearly described. All named researchers must have clearly defined roles and responsibilities.
- Demonstrate relevance to the CGIAR impact area of Gender equality, youth, and social inclusion and at least one of the other impact areas: Nutrition, health, and food security; Poverty reduction, livelihoods, and jobs; Climate adaptation and mitigation; and Environmental health and biodiversity.
- CGIAR Centers are eligible to lead or be included in multiple applications. Centers with presence in the MENA region will be preferred.
- All CGIAR centers are eligible to submit applications.
- ICRISAT, CIFOR and ICRAF cannot be lead centers, but can be partners.
- There is no co-financing requirement for applications. Research activities that propose to add on to existing funded, ongoing, or soon-to-be launched projects are preferred, although new projects are also eligible if they can be completed within 15 months.
