The Greater Washington Community Foundation is offering small awards of up to $2,000 to individuals and nonprofits in Greater Washington working to make their region a more equitable and inclusive place for everyone to live, work, and thrive.
The Foundation is interested in supporting and advancing neighborhood-level projects that will engage diverse communities and help grassroots leaders to implement their ideas. They are especially interested in providing resources to enable ideas and activities that were generated through On the Table conversations.
The Foundation will consider proposals in areas that are aligned with The Community Foundation’s Building Thriving Communities framework from both nonprofit organizations as well as neighborhood leaders who want to do good in their community but are not an incorporated organization. Examples of projects that they would be open to funding include, but are not limited to:
- Developing an oral history project focused on immigrant restaurant owners that will humanize these individuals and document their stories of resilience, immigration, entrepreneurship, and food cultures alongside a virtual portrait photography exhibit.
- Supporting an awareness building campaign of Mutual Aid Networks and the resources they can provide for vulnerable neighborhood residents to address the impact of COVID-19.
- Developing a community mural created by diverse young people that will provide confidence and a sense of place within the community while also beautifying the neighborhood.
- Using existing technologies, a group of neighbors will train local residents to document, report, & upload data describing litter in the community, thus creating “heat maps” that can be used to prioritize areas needing additional attention and resources.
