The Empowering Novel Agribusiness-Led Employment (ENABLE) Youth Kenya Program is now open to all Kenyan Youths that aims at contributing to job creation, food and nutrition security, income generation and improved livelihoods for youth both in urban and rural areas.
The Program is funded by the Government of Kenya and the African Development Bank (AfDB) and is being implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture. Livestock. Fisheries & Cooperatives. The Program is implemented using an incubation model for agricultural entrepreneurship (agripreneurship) which entails training. nurturing. mentoring, coaching and financing successful youth candidates.
Over a period of 5 years, ENABLE Youth Kenya will train and empower 2080 Agricultural Entrepreneurs (Agripreneurs) in 8 Youth Agri-Business Incubation Centres (YABICs) spread across the country. The incubation activities will be conducted under two categories: Standard incubation (for unemployed graduates) and Acceleration (those already engaged in agribusiness but lack access to finance and market linkages) options.
Categories
Two categories of target Incubation process:
- Standard Incubatee (Start-up): Targets unemployed graduates (Diploma or Degree) or start-up agripreneur with an agribusiness idea that requires incubation to actualize. The expected timeline for the standard Incubatees to go through the incubation process will be between six and twelve months.
- Accelerated Incubatee: Targets graduates (Diploma/Degree) youth who own and run an agribusiness that has been in existence for at least more than one and half years but lack access to credit, market linkages or require better business planning skills to accelerate business growth. The expected timeline for the accelerated Incubatees to go through the incubation process will be between three and six months.
Components
ENABLE Youth Kenya Program is made of the following 4 components:
- Enabling Environment for Youth Empowerment
- Entrepreneurship and Agribusiness Incubation
- Program coordination and management
- Financing Youth Agribusinesses
Beneficiaries
- Direct Beneficiaries: The Program targets to train and empower 2,000 agripreneurs and aim to create agribusinesses over the Program period. Each of the agribusinesses will employ on average five other support workers, generating 10,000 direct jobs. Incubatee graduates whose proposals will not access finance under the Program, will be positioned and linked to the private sector to secure professional agri-based jobs.
- Indirect Beneficiaries:The Program will impact on a number of indirect beneficiaries. These will include:
- Benefitting Households, incubatees will be drawn from households whose income and livelihoods will considerably improve as a result of the Program.
- Host Communities YABICs and the resultant agribusinesses will be located in communities that will benefit by having knowledge and learning points and through purchase of raw materials.
- Farmers having youth entrepreneurs linking them to markets will benefit as other actors along the value chains due to the up-scaled activities along the agricultural priority value chains.
- Other beneficiaries include PFIs who will be catalyzed to diverse their portfolio by including the youth, suppliers of equipment, contractors, consultants and designated service providers to the program.
Eligibility Criteria
The opportunity is open to all Kenyan Youths who meet the eligibility criteria below:
- Must be a Kenyan Citizen with a National ID. aged between 18-35 Years.
- A holder of Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized institution in any field of study.
- Shall be required to submit a PIN No. from Kenya Revenue Authority. 1. A demonstrable interest in Agriculture/ Agribusiness either through previous clubs & associations. personal initiatives, seminars and training on agri-issues or any other criteria.
- Willing to establish an agribusiness for Standard Incubatee (Start-up) and own and run an agribusiness for Accelerated incubatee.
- Have a viable agribusiness idea. Value Chains – The proposal should fit within the priority value chains.
