Open call for Community Cinemas in Syria

Open Call: Canon Video Grant for Short Film Documentary

Deadline: 07-Sep-2025

The AFLAMUNA Masahat: Syria has launched in partnership with Ettijahat – Independent Culture, with the hope of filling screens with Arab independent films that reflect realities and represent communities.

This time, those interested in activating community cinema spaces in Syria are invited to join, offering an opportunity for training, funding, and access to films, as well as the chance to become part of the Masahat AFLAMUNA network.

The project offers a training program for 20 emerging Community Cinema Makers, which will cover curation, marketing, community engagement, and technical operational skills. Selected participants will be offered a small unrestricted grant to equip and rehabilitate spaces or cover the running costs of hosting screenings, and will also gain access to a library of independent Arab films with rights cleared for free screenings for their communities.

To be eligible for this program, individuals, spaces, and collectives from all backgrounds who are interested in bringing independent Arab cinema to their communities can apply. Individuals and collectives who do not represent a space must have a written agreement with a space willing to host their screenings. Spaces and collectives must appoint an individual who will receive the training and be the main point of contact. All participants must be residing in Syria, be Arabic speakers, and be over 18 years old.

Selected participants must be committed to attending all online training sessions, which will be conducted at least once per week over a two-month period from October to December 2025. Participants are also required to conduct at least five film screenings between January 2026 and June 2026, utilizing the Masahat library of independent Arab films. All participants must adhere to AFLAMUNA’s non-discrimination policy and actively contribute to making the program a safe space for other participants.

The selection criteria for individuals are engagement in the local community, the relevance of their professional background, the relevance of personal projects and motivation, and diversity of geographical locations, with a priority for underserved geographies. Gender parity and diversity of professional backgrounds are also considered. For spaces and collectives, the criteria are engagement in the local community, legal status, with priority given to nonprofits, the relevance and feasibility of their community screenings plan, the relevance of the space or collective’s general strategy, and diversity of geographical locations with a priority for underserved geographies.
