Deadline: 12-Oct-2025
If you are a student or researcher engaged in Africa-focused studies at a University in Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Iceland, the Nordic Scholarship Programme gives you the opportunity to visit NAI for one month.
Through the Nordic Scholarship Programme, NAI aims to contribute to building capacity in the production of knowledge about Africa, and to promote and establish relations with and between Nordic research communities. The aim of the scholarship programme is to offer a 1-month stay at the Nordic Africa Institute in order to facilitate use of the Institute’s library collections on contemporary Africa (books, periodicals, newspapers, and government publications), and to support connection to existing work at the Institute through NAI research hosts.
The scholarships are awarded once per year, covering travelling expenses for the least expensive fare from the residential address in Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Iceland to Uppsala and return. In addition, scholarship holders are provided with a desk and computer in a shared office, free accommodation centrally located in Uppsala, and a subsistence allowance of SEK 400 per day. Free photocopying of up to 1,000 copies is also included. However, it is important to note that health care insurance or other insurances are not part of the support.
Eligible applicants include master students, PhD candidates, and postdoctoral researchers in the social sciences or humanities. While citizenship is not a restriction, affiliation to a university or research centre in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, or Iceland is required. Furthermore, applicants must be engaged in Africa-oriented studies or research.
In addition to the financial support, the programme provides scholars with access to valuable academic resources and the chance to connect with NAI research hosts. The one-month stay at the Institute offers a workspace in a collaborative environment and opportunities to strengthen research networks. The deadline for applications is 12 October 2025.
