RIZA: Building European Democracy with Women of Migrant Descent Program

Development of the Intersectional Feminist Movement Grant Competition (Georgia)

Deadline: 31-Oct-2025

The RIZA initiative, whose name means “root” in Greek, embodies a deep commitment to embedding EU democratic values—human dignity, equality, the rule of law—within Europe’s diverse societies.

Its mission is to reach the most marginalized, with a particular focus on migrant and refugee women, ensuring these core values resonate meaningfully in communities that are often overlooked.

Led by the European Network of Migrant Women in partnership with Foundation Pangea in Italy, Monika Multicultural Women’s Association in Finland, and the Melissa Network in Greece, RIZA will support 99 grassroots organizations across EU Member States over four years. Through three funding cycles, these local groups will gain both financial assistance and capacity-building support to enhance their impact, especially where resources are most scarce.

Eligible organizations may apply across Europe, with particular encouragement for those based in the Nordic–Baltic region. Thirty-three grants will be awarded this cycle: fifteen micro grants of €17,778, twelve small grants of €32,778, and six medium grants worth €60,000 each. Each grant is fully funded, with 90% disbursed upon signing the agreement and the remaining 10% released after project completion and training.

This opportunity is open to non-profit, independent NGOs based in EU Member States with at least a year of activity and an annual budget under €300,000. Organizations must demonstrate equal gender representation in leadership and a commitment to migrant women’s inclusion. Migrant- and refugee-women-led groups receive priority, as do grassroots entities focused specifically on supporting these communities.

RIZA emphasizes advocacy, democratic participation, combating extremism, and strengthening migrant women’s leadership. Projects may span awareness campaigns, legal empowerment, community organizing, research, or policy shadow reporting—activities that raise visibility and influence in democratic processes. Successful applicants will also participate in a ten-month capacity-building program, enhancing their long-term resilience and reach.

The application process unfolds in two stages: an initial online form by the end of October, followed by full proposal submissions for shortlisted applicants in November and early December. The first cohort of funded projects is set to launch in January 2026, stepping into action with
