The U.S. Embassy Ghana Public Diplomacy Section (PDS) of the U.S. Department of State is soliciting proposals to develop and implement a 2-3 day “TechCamp” workshop on the topic of illegal mining (galamsey) to take place in Accra or Takoradi, Ghana on or about August-September 2023.
Illegal mining is one of the most pressing threats to Ghana’s water supplies, agricultural products, and livelihoods. Although it affects all Ghanaians, there is not widespread agreement on how to tackle the issue, including through the use of technology. To address this need, U.S. Embassy Ghana intends to host a TechCamp that will bring together 50-60 stakeholders from different fields with American experts to develop tech-based solutions to the issue of illegal mining. The grantee may propose a location within or outside of Accra.
Objectives
The main objectives of this TechCamp are to:
- Empower local communities and leaders to identify solutions to illegal mining;
- Promote sustainable livelihoods and economic alternatives;
- Mitigate community and public health impacts; and
- Address related environmental degradation. Following the workshop, participants will devise follow-on projects that address the challenge of illegal mining to advance U.S. Mission goals of spurring environmentally sustainable, long-term economic growth.
Funding Information
- Length of performance period: 12 months
- Number of awards anticipated: One
- Approximate Total Funding: $70,000-$90,000,
- Anticipated program start date: June 2023
- Additional information: Up to $72,000 of the budget should be used for the workshop, and a minimum of $18,000 for follow-on activities. Implementing partner (administrative) fees should not exceed $8,000. In consultation with the PDS, the award recipient must actively engage all participants through the selection process, identify local subject matter experts, make all logistical arrangements, and support follow-on activities.
Eligibility Criteria
- The Public Diplomacy Section encourages applications from the United States and Ghana, including:
- Registered not-for-profit organizations, including think tanks and civil society/non-governmental organizations with programming experience
- Non-profit or governmental educational institutions
- Governmental institutions
- Applicants should be able to document their experience implementing similar projects.For-profit businesses or commercial entities are not eligible to apply.
- Other Eligibility Requirements: In order to be eligible to receive an award, all organizations must have a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) as well as a valid registration
- One Application per Individual or Organization
- Applicants are only allowed to submit one proposal per organization. If more than one proposal is submitted from an organization, all proposals from that institution will be considered ineligible for funding.
