Deadline: 16-Jan-2026
The Australia Awards Fellowships present a unique chance for mid-career professionals and senior officials from eligible developing countries to deepen their expertise, strengthen professional networks and engage in Australia-based short-term study and work placements.
The program invites Australian organisations in partnership with overseas counterpart organisations to apply, enabling a cooperative approach to capacity development that benefits both hosts and fellows.
Successful applicants will receive funding up to a maximum of $517,500 per Fellowship. The maximum amount of funding available per Fellow is $34,500 inclusive of in-partner country(ies) activities and program overhead fee. Each application is limited to 15 DFAT funded Fellows. Fellowships must not be greater than 52 weeks in duration with a minimum of two weeks of the activities taking place in Australia.
Fellow eligibility covers individuals from developing nations who are not Australian citizens or permanent residents, and who are already working in relevant fields in their home country. The fellowship must align with one of the priority development areas – such as climate change and green energy transition; health; gender equality, disability equity and social inclusion; digital economy and cyber resilience; maritime and blue economy; or infrastructure and connectivity. The activities proposed typically include both in-Australia and partner-country components, ensuring a blend of international exposure and local relevance.
Applications must come from Australian entities like businesses, higher education institutions, training providers, government agencies or NGOs, in partnership with overseas counterpart organisations in eligible countries. Key compliance criteria include submission by the legal Australian entity, inclusion of an in-kind or financial partner contribution, a minimum duration of two weeks in Australia, and a total fellowship duration between two and 52 weeks. The partner overseas organisation must not be a branch or arm of the Australian applicant.
This fellowship opportunity enables building stronger institutional ties and professional capabilities that extend beyond the fellowship period. It empowers individuals and organisations to collaboratively address pressing development challenges in their regions while benefiting from Australia’s experience and networks.
