The SUS Programme, jointly offered by the Centre for Advanced Study Sofia (CAS Sofia) and New Europe College Bucharest (NEC), supports postdoctoral scholars from regions affected by Russia’s war against Ukraine. Fellows can spend one or two semesters in Bucharest or Sofia, receive a monthly stipend of €1,000, accommodation, travel reimbursements, and seed funding for research projects. Applications are due March 31, 2026, with fellowships starting in October 2026 or March 2027.

Overview

The SUS Programme Fellowship provides scholars from Ukraine-affected regions with the opportunity to conduct fundamental research in the humanities and social sciences in a supportive academic environment. The programme offers flexible residency arrangements and financial support, ensuring continuity of research even if fellows cannot remain in residence for the full duration.

Eligibility

• Postdoctoral scholars with meaningful proposals for fundamental research in humanities or social sciences

Duration and Location

• One or two semesters: Full academic year (10 months) or single term (5 months)

• Start Dates: October 2026 or March 2027, with additional flexibility for specific cases

• Residency: Primarily in Sofia, with flexible arrangements for scholars based in Ukraine due to conflict

Expectations and Responsibilities

• Work actively on research projects

• Participate in weekly seminars, either physically or virtually

• Engage in scientific events organized by CAS Sofia

• Submit a research article for electronic publication at the end of the fellowship

• Utilize seed funding for academic activities and collaborative initiatives

Selection Process

• Reviewed by the international Academic Advisory Council of CAS, with support from NEC and Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin

• Final results announced in July 2026
