The BC Rehab Foundation offers Individual Grants to people in British Columbia with physical disabilities to help them obtain essential equipment that enhances mobility, independence, and quality of life.
The program funds items like wheelchairs (manual or power), ramps, seating systems, lifts, and assistive technology for those who have exhausted other funding avenues and still face severe need. The goal is to reduce barriers and enable recipients to participate more fully in daily life.
To help fulfill as many requests as possible, BC Rehab has set maximum funding limits for specific equipment types: up to $2,500 for a back-up wheelchair, $1,000 for scooters, and $1,000 for lift chairs. Due to a rise in orthotics requests from Ministry-funded clients, and the Ministry’s responsibility to cover medically necessary orthotics in full for eligible applicants, BC Rehab does not cover the difference in orthotics costs for these clients. However, applicants who do not qualify under the Ministry may still be considered if they provide proper justification from a physiotherapist.
Eligibility is based on a combination of factors. Approved applications typically demonstrate severe financial need, the type of disability, how the requested equipment will improve independence, proof that other funding avenues have been explored, and two or more vendor quotes. Applicants must also provide an assessment or letter of support from a healthcare professional such as an occupational or physiotherapist, and explain how long the equipment will meet their needs. Applications lacking full documentation, including quotes, a copy of the latest Notice of Assessment, and an OT/PT assessment, will not be considered.
BC Rehab’s mandate covers individuals with physical disabilities including spinal cord injury, acquired brain injury, stroke, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, multiple sclerosis, polio, amputation, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and Guillain-Barré. This grant program offers vital support to individuals who otherwise could not afford essential mobility equipment, providing them with greater autonomy and improved participation in their communities.
