The “National Hackathon on Disability and Inclusion” launch event took place at the Innovation Space of Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), inviting young persons with disabilities together with programmers to develop innovations to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities.
The Hackathon is organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in partnership with the Italian Association Amici di Raoul Follereau (AIFO), and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Action (MGCAS).
The Hackathon aims to further contribute and enhance strategies developed by governmental and social actors with the goal of promoting the participation and empowerment of persons with disabilities, including a focus on expanding inclusion, participation and input of young persons with disabilities.
Thematic Areas
The aim of the Hackathon is to solve challenges in the following thematic areas:
- Access to essential services in the community
- App/website/SMS service to identify the needs and priorities of young people with disabilities;
- App/website/SMS service that increases the autonomy of young people with disabilities;
- App/website/SMS service for creating groups or associations of young people with disabilities, also emphasizing training and mutual assistance;
- App/website/SMS service to combat stigma and discrimination against people with disabilities, promote their self-esteem;
- App/website/SMS service to train health professionals, police, court and from different socio-sanitary areas to deal with young people with different types of disabilities;
- App/website/SMS service to report cases of violence against people with disabilities (boys and girls).
- Inclusive humanitarian and emergency action to protect the rights of young people with disabilities at risk and in conflict
- App/website/SMS service for collecting and disseminating information in accessible formats on humanitarian emergencies;
- Initiatives in which professionals from the most diverse social and health areas are trained to deal with people with different types of disabilities, in particular girls and boys.
- Accessible information and technology
- App/website/SMS service for dissemination of inclusive sexual and reproductive health;
- App/website/SMS service that promotes social and health services in an inclusive way;
- Producing a web repository (website) of resources for developers to build mobile apps and other inclusive mHealth technologies.
The Hackathon, to take place in Maputo from 25-28 January, is a contest in which young teams of programmers and designers will participate in a 72-hour programming marathon, to develop solutions to challenges for persons with disabilities.
Funding Information
Each winning team will receive a cash prize worth 100,000 MT.
Hackathon Model
- Hackathon will follow with two models, namely; Speech presentation and Workshop. The first model consists of the first two challenges. In this component, the Jury team composed of the organizers will receive the analysis of different proposals, written and oral, from participants with solutions for each of the two challenges. Finally, a winning proposal will be identified for each of the two challenges.
- The third challenge will be a workshop, virtual and physical, in which pre-selected developers will come together for a day or two to focus on developing instruments and protocols that will allow other developers to build eHealth/mHealth products suitable for the People with Disabilities, in particular for the Mozambican reality.
- In both models, it will be team participation and it is encouraged that each of them must include at least one young person with a disability.
