United States: Assistance for Arts Education Program

MEST Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellowship - Ghana

Deadline: 25-Aug-2025

The U.S. Department of Education is issuing a notice inviting applications for new awards for the Assistance for Arts Education (AAE) program.

With a purpose rooted in promoting equitable access to arts education, the program is designed to serve students across the country, especially those who are disadvantaged or living with disabilities. Through this initiative, selected projects will support professional development for educators, create accessible instructional materials, and foster community partnerships that enhance arts learning in schools.

This funding opportunity aims to broaden the reach and impact of arts education by supporting a variety of activities. Projects may focus on building the capacity of teachers, principals, and arts educators through targeted professional development. The development and dissemination of arts-based educational programming, including digital and online resources in multiple disciplines, are also key components of the initiative. Additionally, the program encourages national and community outreach efforts that strengthen collaboration between schools, local education agencies, cultural institutions, and national arts centers.

A total of approximately $13 million is available for this competition. Grants will range from $750,000 to $1,000,000 per year, with the average award expected to be around $850,000 annually. Each grant will cover a 12-month period, and a maximum of four awards will be issued. The program allows for the possibility of continued funding in future years, depending on available funds and the quality of applications received.

Eligible applicants span a broad range of organizations. Local educational agencies serving student populations with at least 20 percent living below the poverty line are encouraged to apply. Other eligible applicants include state education agencies, institutions of higher education, museums, cultural institutions, the Bureau of Indian Education, eligible national nonprofit organizations, and other qualified private institutions or agencies. Applicants that are LEAs must include recent U.S. Census data to verify their eligibility based on poverty rates.

The AAE program presents an important opportunity to use the arts as a tool for academic and personal growth, especially in under-resourced communities. It seeks to foster creative learning environments and meaningful access to high-quality arts instruction, empowering schools and cultural organizations to work together in delivering lasting educational experiences.
