Apply Now: CSOs for Plastic Waste Management and Economic Empowerment (Liberia)

NBS Foundation Grant Program (Slovakia)

Deadline: 22-Sep-2025

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has launched a call for proposals targeting Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) in Liberia to lead efforts in reducing plastic waste pollution while advancing economic empowerment in local communities.

This initiative seeks to address the growing threat of plastic pollution on land and in water bodies, while also creating livelihood opportunities and strengthening community resilience.

The project’s main objective is to conserve the environment by reducing plastic waste and improving environmental quality through community-driven action. UNDP intends to partner with one qualified CSO or CBO to design and implement activities that raise awareness about plastic pollution, promote responsible waste management, and create economic value from plastic materials. The initiative emphasizes applying environmental laws, reducing dumping and burning of plastics, and turning waste into reusable or marketable products.

Selected organizations will be expected to train and build the capacity of 16 community mobilizers across the project sites to promote plastic waste management, recycling, and recovery. Communities will be educated on the environmental and health impacts of plastic pollution, while systems will be set up to monitor and track its effects on farmlands, water bodies, air quality, and fish habitats. The project will also gather feedback from community members, including farmers, to measure the impact of improved plastic waste management practices.

The intervention will encourage waste segregation at the source, develop standard operating procedures for handling and transporting plastic waste, and promote behavior change through awareness campaigns and messaging. By transforming how communities manage plastic waste, the project aims to reduce environmental degradation while unlocking new economic opportunities, fostering sustainability alongside economic growth.

The grant offers up to USD 33,481.25 for a six-month implementation period. Eligible applicants must be duly registered national or local CSOs or CBOs with a presence in at least one of the project’s counties in Liberia. They must also demonstrate proven administrative and financial capacity, along with a relevant proposal and a clear strategy for achieving the project’s expected results. This initiative provides an opportunity for local organizations to drive both environmental conservation and community economic empowerment through innovative approaches to plastic waste management.
