The International Data Corporation (IDC) is seeking applications for successful Smart Cities and Communities projects and initiatives in North American towns, cities, counties, states and provinces.
Specifically, they are looking for best practice examples of urban innovation in the use of technology and data, partnerships, funding models and community engagement. They are seeking details on implemented initiatives (pilots or projects) as opposed to ideas or planned initiatives.

- Data-Driven Policing (e.g. Real-time Crime Centers, Officer Wearables, Video Analytics)
- Next-Generation Emergency Services (e.g. Next Gen 911, Early Warning Systems)
- Digital Equity and Accessibility (e.g. Public WiFi, Accessibility Services, ADA Compliance)
- Economic Development, Tourism, Arts, Libraries, Culture, Open Spaces (e.g Connected Museums, Kiosks, Event management)
- Education (e.g. Smart Campus, Smart Classrooms, Virtual Offerings, Online and Remote Services)
- Smart Buildings (e.g. Capacity Planning, Return-to-Work Programs, Sustainability, Security Systems)
- Smart Water (e.g. COVID-19 Testing, Smart Metering, Waste Reduction Efforts)
- Sustainable Infrastructure (e.g. Smart Lighting, Waste Collection, Environmental Monitoring, Resiliency)
- Transportation – Connected & Autonomous Vehicles, Public Transit, Ride-Hailing/Ride-Sharing
- Transportation Infrastructure (e.g. Parking, Transit Hubs; Traffic Management and Equipment for Connected and/or Autonomous Vehicles)
- Urban Planning and Land Use (e.g. Permitting, Licensing, Inspection & Zoning; Digital Twins, Community Resiliency)
- Public Health and Social Services
Note: IT Vendors and Technology Consultants do not qualify for the IDC Smart Cities North America Awards. Vendors may instead nominate projects on behalf of the cities and communities they are working with that are their end user clients. Please provide confirmation from the client that they wish to participate in the IDC Smart Cities North America Awards.
Criteria
- There are 14 initiative categories. You may select your project to be eligible for more than one category but not to exceed three categories.
- Three projects from each category will be announced as finalists prior to the announcement of the winner.
- All fields are mandatory to complete your submission. You may also submit supplemental files.
