Apply for Japanese-language Learners Event Grant (US)

Submissions open for Matla Grants Program 2025

Deadline: 01-Sep-2025

The Japan Foundation, Los Angeles (JFLA) offers financial support for Japanese-language related events that occur on a national, statewide, or regional level. These events can include speech contests, quiz contests, or presentations designed to motivate many Japanese-language learners across multiple schools and educational levels, including primary, secondary, college, and adult learners. The goal is to promote Japanese-language education within the area.

Grants of up to $1,000 are available to support these events. The events must take place and conclude between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026.

Applicants must be non-profit institutions or organizations involved in Japanese-language education within the U.S. Individuals are not eligible to apply.

The Japan Foundation generally does not provide grants to U.S. government bodies, including ministries, embassies, or consulates-general in Japan, though academic, cultural, or research institutions like universities and museums are exceptions. Also excluded are institutions currently funded by the Japanese government, organizations restricted by law from receiving foreign government-affiliated aid, and those serving commercial, political, or religious purposes.

Applicants must have a bank account in the institution’s name that can receive grants from the Japan Foundation. If needed, a bank account can be opened before the grant payment. Receiving grants from JFLA must comply with all applicable laws and regulations.

Events that are closed and limited to a single school are not eligible for funding.
