The Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs (EAP) is currently inviting applications form organizations for its Pacific Island Marine Protected Area Projects with an aim to develop and manage projects leading to the creation and implementation of more, effectively managed Marine Protected Areas (MPA) in the Pacific Islands region.
The Pacific Islands region is marked by recent success and significant momentum in the creation of MPAs. MPAs are safe havens for marine resources and can serve as living laboratories that are crucial to scientific research and discoveries that benefit humankind. MPAs can also boost economic activity in the countries they are created in by increasing fish stocks sustainability and created new or improved opportunities for tourism.
Goals
- Promote the development of new MPAs, including through:
- Developing effective national policy frameworks and adequate legislation for MPA governance
- Implementing marine planning, including scientific assessment, to support the identification of new MPAs
- Undertaking stakeholder scoping, consultation and other engagement processes
- Developing and implementing innovative financing arrangements
- Improve effective management of existing MPAs, including through:
- Building capacity for compliance, surveillance and enforcement
- Promoting effective stakeholder participation and representation through community organizing, education and engagement
- Building capacity for adaptive management
- Promoting livelihood diversification and economic development that support marine protection goals
- Developing and implementing approaches to ensure sustainable financing of MPAs
Funding Information
- EAP anticipates having approximately $445,500.
- Proposals must request a minimum of $200,000 up to the maximum available amount of $445,500.
- The initial period of performance of the proposal should be 18 months
Eligibility Criteria
- Be a U.S.-based or foreign-based non-profit organization/non-government organization (NGO)
- Be a Foreign Public Entity (public international organization); or
- Be a private, public, or state institution of higher education (U.S. or foreign)
- EAP is committed to an anti-discrimination policy in all of its projects and activities.
- EAP welcomes submissions of proposals irrespective of an applicant’s race, ethnicity, color, creed, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or other status.
- EAP welcomes proposals from organizations working with the most at risk and vulnerable communities, including women, youth, persons with disabilities, members of ethnic or religious minority groups, and LGBTI persons
