Call for Expression of Interest: Provision of Social Assistance in Eswatini

Economic Justice Grants Program in Africa

Deadline: 01-Sep-2025

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is accepting applications for the provision of social assistance to forcibly displaced persons, specifically refugees and asylum-seekers, in Eswatini. This initiative is part of UNHCR’s mandate to ensure international protection for displaced populations, which is fulfilled in cooperation with national governments.

This call aims to select suitable partners to implement the Social Assistance Project for refugees and asylum-seekers on behalf of the UNHCR South Africa Multi-Country Office (SAMCO). The project is designed to enhance the protection and support of refugees and asylum-seekers in Eswatini by offering quality basic social assistance, livelihoods, and long-term solutions.

The project’s goals include ensuring that forcibly displaced persons (FDPs) are able to enjoy international protection, access national protection services, and become empowered through socio-economic opportunities. Sectors covered under the project include education, health, livelihoods, protection (including child protection and gender-based violence), WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene), and the environment.

The expected outcomes of the project include strengthened prevention and response to gender-based violence (GBV), increased child protection, enhanced community engagement, and expanded access to education at all levels through both national systems and UNHCR interventions. Other outcomes involve improved access to health, sanitation, and shelter services for FDPs, as well as support for economic empowerment through job placement, technical training, and agricultural activities.

By 2027, the goal is for all forcibly displaced and stateless persons in Eswatini to benefit from improved national and development support systems aimed at promoting self-reliance. UNHCR requires implementing partners to follow sector-specific standards in line with the agency’s areas of specialization to ensure effective protection and assistance.

This project will be implemented in Manzini, Eswatini.
