The International Labour Organization (ILO), through the ACCEL Egypt project, is working to eliminate child labour in the tomato supply chain across Upper Egypt, Alexandria, Fayoum, and Al-Minya. The project provides comprehensive child protection, family support, community mobilization, and compliance monitoring to support up to 1,500 children and their families, fostering safer workplaces and long-term resilience.
Project Overview
The ACCEL Egypt project is designed to:

Reduce child labour in tomato production

Improve compliance with national child labour standards

Provide holistic support to vulnerable children and their families

Foster responsible practices among farmers, landowners, and intermediaries
The initiative targets key tomato-producing governorates: Upper Egypt, Alexandria, Fayoum, and Al-Minya, with a strong focus on protecting children aged 8 to 18.
Key Components
1. Child Identification and Protection

Screening and electronic profiling: Identify children working or at risk in the supply chain

Case management: Tailored interventions, including psychosocial support, literacy assistance, and reintegration into formal or informal education

ILO SCREAM activities: Art, sports, and media programs to raise awareness of child labour and promote fundamental rights at work
2. Family Support and Social Assistance

Temporary cash or in-kind assistance: Compensate families for one agricultural season to reduce dependency on child labour

Referral to national services: Social protection, healthcare, and economic empowerment programs to build long-term household resilience
3. Community Mobilization

Awareness campaigns targeting parents, farmers, landowners, and intermediaries

Promotion of occupational safety and health

Advocacy for education and rights-based practices

Dissemination of information about government support programs
4. NGO Implementation Role
Selected NGOs will be responsible for:

Education, protection, and social assistance services

Documentation, reporting, and monitoring of project activities

Implementation across the targeted governorates over a nine-month contract period
Eligibility and Requirements
Applicants must demonstrate:

Proven experience in child labour prevention and child protection programming

Expertise in case management, field data collection, and family social support

Strong track record in community outreach and advocacy
Children eligible for support include:

Children currently working (permanent, seasonal, or temporary)

Siblings of working children

Children at high risk of school dropout

Children from economically or socially vulnerable families
