Aboriginal Fund for Species at Risk – Aquatic Programming in Canada

Deadline: 07-Nov-2025

The Species at Risk Act in Canada offers a unique opportunity for individuals and organizations to contribute to the protection and recovery of species that are at risk.

As part of this initiative, proposals are invited for the development of recovery strategies and action plans for species listed under the act. This initiative is aimed at ensuring the preservation of Canada’s biodiversity through strategic actions that target both the conservation of species and their critical habitats.

The goal of this process is to ensure that efforts to protect species at risk are not only in compliance with legal requirements but also effective in addressing the real needs of these species. Proposals are sought to identify and implement measures that will directly benefit species at risk, including but not limited to habitat restoration, population management, and the reduction of human impacts. It is a call for coordinated actions between government bodies, conservationists, researchers, and other stakeholders to ensure the survival of these vulnerable species. The minimum funding request is $20,000 for new 1-year projects.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the species in question and the challenges it faces. They must propose a detailed plan that includes specific actions and timelines for the recovery process. Proposals should be based on sound scientific data and a strong rationale for the chosen interventions. Successful proposals will be those that can show how their actions will contribute to measurable improvements in the status of the species and its habitat.

The funding for these projects is intended to support the implementation of recovery strategies, including on-the-ground conservation work. It is also designed to support collaborative efforts among various stakeholders, including local communities, Indigenous groups, and environmental organizations. The initiative encourages innovation and flexibility in approach, understanding that each species may require unique solutions depending on its ecological context.

The recovery strategies and action plans developed under this initiative are critical for ensuring the long-term survival of Canada’s at-risk species. The program aims to bring about real change, not just in terms of protecting individual species but also in fostering a broader culture of conservation across Canada. Through these efforts, the hope is to mitigate the threats facing endangered species and contribute to a healthier, more sustainable environment for future generations.
