The Inter-American Development Bank and the FEMSA Foundation have announced the 2020 IDB-FEMSA Awards, which since 2009 recognize the most innovative solutions in the water, sanitation and solid waste management sectors.
The award aims to highlight innovative startups, solutions, products and initiatives in water, sanitation.
Categories
In the current edition, it will bestow a $10,000 prize to each winner in the three following categories chosen for 2020:
- Water Category
- Sanitation Category
- Solid Waste Category

- The winners of each category will receive a monetary award as follows:
- Additionally, the following honorable mentions will be awarded:
- Honorable Mention I: For a finalist venture, product, initiative or service among six months and two (2) years of operation.
- Honorable Mention II: For a finalist venture, product, initiative or service between two and four years of operation.

The prize will be awarded early December 2020 at a live online ceremony where finalists will have the opportunity to present their solutions to the jury and participating public.
Eligibility Criteria
- The minimum age of the participants is 18 years old as of June 25, 2020.
- The applicant must be the founder or co-founder of the organization / undertaking.
- The organization / undertaking must be active and operating and must have been established for at least six (6) months and not more than four (4) years at the official opening of the period of applications of the call. Likewise, it must be legally registered in one of the IDB borrowing member countries. Support information will be requested if necessary.
- Participants must operate in a IDB borrowing member country
Selection Criteria
- The jury will select a maximum of 7 finalists who will compete in the final live virtual round where they will have the chance to pitch their solutions to a jury in front of an audience, composed by water, sanitation and solid waste management experts from all over the world.
- The selected finalists, who meet the eligibility criteria, will participate in an intensive training (bootcamp) program for social innovators, where they will have the opportunity to meet with high-level mentors.
